Offering gifts to gods and kami is a long-standing tradition in Japan. Some devote their lives to serving the gods. Others are offered as sacrifices—gifts given by their families to earn favor or as payment for blessings. These offerings, however, are rare, for who would willingly give another’s life to the gods?
“The heavens are full of many gods,” Shouto’s mother had told him. “But the Goddess of Creation has been missing for millennia. Only leaving behind her son, the Prince.”
In the absence of the Goddess of Creation, a new king rose to power: the God of Strength. He was one of the many gods created by her hand, unlike her husband, the God of Destruction. These two primordial beings, known as Inko and Hisashi, were called the First Creator and the First Destroyer. Now, however, the heavens were ruled by All Might, the God of Strength, until the young Prince of the Stars was ready to ascend the throne.
This tale of the First Gods was one Shouto’s mother told him often.
Now, however, he was far from her, living in the Shrine of the Moon God under the cold, oppressive presence of his father. His mother was gone, lost to him forever.
